My first thought when I heard about this project is charcoal. Although mixed media is allowed, I felt that other medias are not very appropriate, at least for me. Watercolour would be too soft, acrylic would not be as sharp(even if it would, it would be time-consuming), and pencil is just time consuming. Therefore, I chose charcoal to approach this project. The object I chose is the inside of a mechanical watch. Watches always fascinate me because of how important precision is to them. Gears moving each other ticking the hands of the watch...they all represent time. I chose a realistic approach because I want to present the industrial precision of the watch and also appreciate the amount of time it takes to manufacture a watch. I'd hate to draw an equal sign between realism and lack of creativity, because this is definitely not the case. If I'd chose any other style, I'd feel I'm disrespecting the people and the amount of work they put in to make a watch.
After I finished shading, I added colours with soft pastel to make it a bit more lively. It also shows the colours of the jewelries they have inside the watch. I have to say, soft pastels and charcoal go really well together. If anything inspired me..I would say it's my grandpa. He is a huge fan of mechanical watches. I always watch him dissembling them and they just fascinate me. After I finished this drawing, I was told that I lacked colours. I agree with that and I will try to include more colours to make the drawing more appealing visually. However, I do think I succeeded on the technical and creative part of this project. After this project, I had more knowledge of mixing two medias and also learnt how to focus on just one part of the drawing.
