A portrait does not need to look like the person. This might sound crazy, but it is true in the world of art (of course, you cannot draw a family of donkeys when drawing a family portrait). In this project, we were asked to do contour drawings of eyes, noses, ears, and mouths, and later use them to draw a portrait. I chose Arthur as my partner to draw. Although few can tell that it is Arthur from the final product, I feel that I accomplished my goal that I set before starting: a devil monk spirit engulfing a warm-hearted innocent high school student.
I used soft pastel to start the face because I felt most comfortable with that; however, one of the instructions were to use colour pencils. Realising that, I had to finish what was remaining in colour pencils. It, however, turned out surprisingly well. I did not expect them to blend with each other and thought I had to restart. The right side of the face are well blended shades of a realistic colour tone of the human skin, while the left side are crosses of lines that shows the colour tone of human veins. For the background, I chose a simple gradient of blue with pastels.
Looking back at this picture, I would add more highlights to it if possible. I feel that there are not enough whites that stand out. I enjoyed this project overall. I would improve on getting out of my comfort zone if I were to redo this (using colour pencils).
